Etna Project

The Pillar That Holds Up the Sky

A UNESCO World Heritage Site since 2013, Mount Etna is a young mountain, born 500,000 years ago from an eruption on the seafloor of a now-vanished gulf, in what is today the Plain of Catania.

The history of cultivation in this territory, with its unique climatic and environmental characteristics, marks a particularly prosperous period for the economy: in recent years, the vineyards of Etna have garnered national and international recognition.

The winemaking production of Etna stands apart from the rest of Sicily, as it defines a one-of-a-kind ecosystem. Its history began with a remarkable geological event that lasted 700,000 years, giving rise to the highest volcano in Europe.

Sicilian wines, now celebrated worldwide, highlight the territory and its deep-rooted traditions.

Our Vineyards on Etna

Many love to describe the wine-growing territory of Etna as an “island within an island” due to its unique territorial and climatic characteristics. Vineyards are primarily cultivated between 300 and 900 meters above sea level, but in certain areas particularly suited to viticulture, they can reach altitudes of up to 1,100 meters.

The “Etna DOC” area, encompassing 20 municipalities on the slopes of Mount Etna, was the first DOC in Sicily and one of the oldest in Italy.

On the northern slope, we find the historic Vigna Feudo di Mezzo and the newest vineyards established in Feudo Gabelle, Montelaguardia, Piano Dario, and Chiusa Politi.

Feudo di Mezzo: The Centenarian Vineyard

Feudo di Mezzo is located in Passopisciaro, a hamlet of Castiglione di Sicilia. Nestled in a lunar landscape, it features century-old Alberello vines traversed by the Sciara del Fuoco and surrounded by ancient olive trees.

The DOC Grape Varieties

Nerello Mascalese is the most widespread variety in the Etna region, producing luminous red wines with brilliant hues and fragrant aromas. These wines combine complexity with an approachable drinkability, satisfying both connoisseurs and newcomers alike.

Carricante offers exceptionally vertical wines with a fresh saline trail. Its aromas range from noble yeasts to citrus, anise seeds, and bread crust, delivering a truly unique sensory experience.
